Located in the heart of the Batten Kill river valley, Farm Camp was designed for and by food professionals. It is the only program of its kind created to bring you a wide-ranging, food-focused, exploration of our regional food system. Farm Camp is more than a series of farm tours. Farm Camp aims to expose the NYC food professional to a broad range of agriculture issues that affect not just how and what we eat but also the future of our food system and rural landscape. It doesn't just show you the farm, it gives you a hands-on farm experience.
Campers will start the day with morning chores at their host farm. Then, the day will be filled with talks, demos and tours of notable area producers. We'll get hands-on along the way, from slaughtering chickens to moving pigs through pasture.
Farm Camp aims to explore the real challenges facing the creation of a vibrant local food system. We'll examine supply and talk about distribution channels. We'll decipher the lingo. We'll talk about slaughterhouses and butchering. We'll walk the farm roads and learn about breeds of livestock. We'll collect morning eggs still warm from the chicken and taste the difference pasture-raised and freshness make.
Designed by farmers and food professionals, Farm Camp creates a dialogue between these interdependent groups and among campers. It's an opportunity to expand your knowledge, your palate, and your impact. We hope you'll join us.
